Iran backs “any measure” taken by Palestinian leaders in Gaza talks, president says

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian pledged his backing for "any measure" taken by Palestinian leaders in Gaza peace negotiations, according to Iranian state media reports. Pezeshkian made this commitment during a phone conversation with Khalil al-Hayya, the head of Hamas's political bureau. The Iranian president expressed admiration for al-Hayya's role and leadership in mediating between Palestinian factions, as reported by Iran's IRIB broadcaster.

Iran's support extends to "any measure, initiative, or decision that the Palestinian leadership adopts during the course of the negotiations," Pezeshkian stated, as cited by IRIB. The potential for a lasting peace deal in Gaza has been a topic of discussion recently, as US President Donald Trump announced what he termed a historic agreement aimed at disarming Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza.

However, Hamas has stated they will only comply with the deal if Israel ceases its strikes in the territory and withdraws troops to the "yellow line," as outlined in the October ceasefire agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to Trump's announcement for the first time on Tuesday, stating that his government is currently reviewing the proposal but has not yet reached a decision.
