I warned NPP its top-down primaries would create factions – Asiedu Nketia

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed his concerns to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) about the potential consequences of their top-down approach to organizing internal elections. In an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr. Nketia warned that such a method could create divisions within political parties.

He explained that when the presidential candidate is chosen top-down, supporters of the defeated candidates might break into factions, leading to party fragmentation. Despite Asiedu Nketia's warning, the NPP proceeded with the top-down system. Mr. Nketia argued that bottom-up electoral processes, which involve grassroots participation, are essential for maintaining unity after flagbearer elections.

He maintained that the current situation within the NPP reflects the very challenges he had predicted, as supporters of different presidential candidates are experiencing frustration and division within the party.
