“Ask Asiedu Nketia what he means” – NPP rejects claim it created Mahama third-term debate

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has firmly rejected allegations from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, that the party fabricated the debate surrounding President John Mahama's eligibility for a third term. NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, addressed these claims on Joy FM’s Top Story, questioning why the party would be blamed for a matter currently under constitutional review.

Ahiagbah contended that the issue stemmed from clarifying whether Ghana's presidential term limits law applies to both consecutive and non-consecutive terms. He challenged Asiedu Nketia to clarify his stance on this matter, suggesting that the NPP is merely seeking clarity on a constitutional issue, not manufacturing controversy.

Ahiagbah emphasized that the Constitution belongs to all Ghanaians, not a single political party, and questioned whether the NPP had initiated the case for Supreme Court interpretation. The discussion, he argued, is a serious constitutional matter requiring national attention, not political manipulation. Ahiagbah explained that the core issue was whether a president serving two non-consecutive terms could be eligible for another term, highlighting the potential implications for Ghana's democratic framework if the Supreme Court ruled differently.

He stressed that the NPP's concern was rooted in safeguarding the integrity of the constitutional order, not driven by political interests. These remarks followed Asiedu Nketia's assertion that the NPP introduced the President Mahama third-term debate to sow confusion within the NDC. Ahiagbah insisted that such constitutional matters demand serious consideration, rejecting the notion that the NPP created this debate.
