‘Gross indiscipline’ in schools demands urgent action – National Chief Imam

The National Chief Imam has urged for immediate and unified action to tackle the escalating issue of "gross indiscipline" in Ghana's educational institutions, warning of its potential to undermine the nation's moral and social framework. At the fourth Ghana Muslim Leaders and Catholic Bishops Dialogue, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, speaking on behalf of the Chief Imam, highlighted the surge in disciplinary problems and hooliganism in senior high schools, which have become a major worry for the government, educators, parents, and society as a whole.

The Imam emphasized that the issue has sparked a nationwide discussion on restoring discipline in schools, making this year's event particularly pertinent. Reflecting the joint dedication of Muslim and Catholic leaders, the dialogue's theme underscores their shared determination to find practical solutions to the problem in both the short and long term.

Dialogue is deemed a vital instrument for fostering understanding and consensus, as Sheikh Shaibu stated, "through dialogue, we achieve the openness of the mind and the closeness of the heart." To ensure meaningful outcomes, the Imam announced the formation of a joint working committee to oversee the execution of meeting recommendations.

The Imam expressed confidence that the collaboration between the two faith communities would reinforce moral values, encourage responsible behavior among young people, and aid in restoring discipline in Ghana's schools.
