German airport diverts flights after security alert over unidentified object

On Tuesday evening, an unidentified security-related incident occurred at Leipzig-Halle airport in Germany, prompting the diversion of multiple flights and the deployment of a bomb disposal robot. The incident involved an object found near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft, which raised concerns among airport officials. The object, suspected to be a drone equipped with a detonator and potentially explosive materials, was located close to the south runway.

Despite initial reports suggesting the object detonated, police later clarified that the incident did not pose a danger to the public.

The subsequent incident involved a cargo plane colliding with an unknown object around 6km from the airport, though it managed to land safely at Hanover airport, sustaining minor damage to its nose section. This event further heightened security concerns at the area. A passenger plane from Mallorca and several cargo planes intended for Leipzig-Halle were rerouted to alternative locations following the initial alert.

Following the incident, regular operations resumed at the airport early Wednesday, but on the north runway only. Investigations into the southern runway were ongoing to gather more information about the events. Germany, a significant supporter of Ukraine's military efforts, has frequently observed drones flying over sensitive sites, including airports, military bases, and industrial facilities.

Authorities suspect Russia of orchestrating many of these incidents, categorizing them as part of a systematic campaign of sabotage, espionage, and disinformation. In July 2024, a parcel exploded at Leipzig airport, suspected to be a Moscow-linked arson sabotage attempt, although Russia denied involvement. Additionally, in a separate event last year, a Chinese national was convicted for leaking flight schedules and cargo details at Leipzig-Halle airport to a suspected spy for Beijing.
