Dr. M. S. Swaminathan Award for Environment Protection 2026 presented to two women

Two women, P. Pechiyammal and Govindhammal, were honored on Wednesday with the Dr. M. S. Swaminathan Award for Environment Protection 2026. The award was presented by Virendra Tiwari, Chairman of the National Biodiversity Authority, alongside other dignitaries, including Club President Radhika Sathyanarayana. The women were recognized for their impactful work in their respective communities, striking a balance between development and biodiversity.

Pechiyammal, from Ramanathapuram, pioneered in gathering ghost gear, while Govindhammal, from Villupuram, championed sustainable agriculture. Both women expressed their gratitude to the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation for their contributions to environmental protection. Pechiyammal was surprised to receive the award for her efforts in collecting plastic waste from the shore, while Govindhammal shared how her life transformed from being dependent on rain to becoming a member of a farmers' producers company.

Soumya Swaminathan, chairperson of the foundation, praised the efforts of the women and highlighted the importance of their roles in sustainable practices.
