‘Democracy must mean freedom without fear and persecution’ – Bawumia cites UGCC ideals on Founding Day

Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia emphasized during a speech in Axim on August 4, 2026, that the principles of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) must serve as the guiding foundation for Ghana's democracy. The UGCC, founded by Danquah, Busia, and Dombo, represented fundamental values such as respect for the individual, adherence to the rule of law, democratic accountability, private enterprise, social responsibility, and equal citizenship.

Bawumia stated that these ideals were never intended to be merely decorative, but rather to inform the country's governance and the choices made by its citizens. He clarified that true freedom extends beyond the right to vote, encompassing the liberty to freely express oneself, practice one's religion, engage in lawful business, and receive fair treatment from the state.

Bawumia stressed the importance of the rule of law being practical and equally applied to everyone, irrespective of their social or economic status. He reaffirmed his dedication to enterprise, explaining that it is not indifference to hardship but the belief that opportunity, skills, and a fair system empower people to foster prosperity for themselves and others.

Bawumia concluded by highlighting the ongoing relevance of these principles, stressing that their credibility hinges on their visible implementation in the behavior, organization, and solutions offered by Ghana's leaders and institutions.
