Chelsea nearing £16.3m deal for Rayo defender Chavarria

Chelsea is nearing a £16.3 million deal for Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria, according to recent reports. The 28-year-old left-back is a key target for new manager Xabi Alonso, who previously worked with Chavarria at Real Madrid. Negotiations have been ongoing since mid-June, with Rayo initially rejecting a £15 million offer from Chelsea before raising their valuation to nearly £42.8 million.

However, all parties are now confident a deal will be finalized. Chavarria, who scored a goal in Rayo's Conference League final loss to Crystal Palace, is eager to move to Chelsea. Along with right-back Marco Palestra, whose £47 million move from Atalanta was announced in July, Chavarria's arrival would allow Alonso to implement his wing-back system that propelled Bayer Leverkusen to Bundesliga glory in 2024.

The signing of Chavarria also bolsters the left-back position after Marc Cucurella's transfer to Real Madrid. With the addition of experienced players like Welbeck and Henderson, as well as young talent such as Rogers and Lacroix, Chelsea continues to strengthen its squad. The club is also expected to focus on player sales, with the imminent transfer of midfielder Valentin Barco from Strasbourg.
