Brazil condemns US decision to revoke ambassador’s visa

The Brazilian government has strongly denounced the US decision to revoke the visa of Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, affirming they believe the accusations to be false. The United States government justified the move by alleging Brazil's delay in granting the necessary agrément to the Trump administration's nominee for the US Embassy in Brazil. However, Brazil refuted these claims, stating they were incorrect.

Brazil's Communications Secretariat released a statement refuting the US's justifications, arguing that the disclosure of the nominee's name violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. This convention stipulates that the name of a nominee cannot be made public until the host country grants agrément. Furthermore, Brazil claimed the US was attempting to interfere in its electoral system, citing the denial of entry to two US government officials.

The Brazilian government also pointed out that this action is part of a broader pattern of "hostile measures" against Brazil, driven by ideological differences incompatible with a mutual respect-driven partnership. The Planalto presidential palace mentioned that Brazilian officials continue to face sanctions under the US Magnitsky Act, imposed as retaliation for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's alleged coup plot.

Despite this, Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been working towards improving relations between the two nations, even appealing for the lifting of individual sanctions during his May visit to Washington.
