After tough Michigan primary, Democrats set sights on Rogers

With the contentious Michigan primary now behind them, Senate Democrats are rapidly shifting their focus towards the Republican nominee, Mike Rogers, according to recent news. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has launched a substantial ad campaign, commencing on Wednesday, aimed at criticizing Rogers for his ties to the pharmaceutical industry and insurance companies, labeling him "the biggest name in corruption."

This messaging is bolstered by new polling conducted by GQR in June, which indicates a significant advantage for the Democratic contender. The poll, carried out in June, revealed that President Donald Trump has an unfavorable rating of 58%, while Rogers trails behind a generic Democrat with a 50% unfavorable rating. The poll also highlighted Rogers' personal unfavorability at 29% and 32% unfavorable.

Despite running his primary campaign against the Democratic establishment, El-Sayed is expected to receive support from this same establishment if elected. Rogers, who represents a reliably Republican constituency, has garnered backing from Trump and party leaders, with a lengthy track record of campaigning at the general election level.

During a recent Semafor interview, Rogers previewed potential Democratic attacks on him, stating, "This guy can't tell the truth. I would get used to and buckle up for a guy that is going to be the most untruthful candidate that we probably have ever seen in Michigan." In a previous election in 2024, Rogers narrowly lost to incumbent Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin, even as Trump secured a victory in Michigan.

Given Trump's declining approval ratings nationally, Democrats are increasingly optimistic about their prospects in defeating Rogers once again. The polling memo underscores Rogers' vulnerability due to his history of accepting financial contributions from corporate entities, voting in favor of them, and subsequently receiving lucrative job offers from these same interests post-congressional service.

This portrayal, according to Democratic pollsters, poses a "devastating narrative" that effectively deters voters from backing Rogers. Maeve Coyle, a spokesperson for the DSCC, confidently asserts, "Rogers is an unsuitable candidate with a dubious record, and his shortcomings will undoubtedly lead to his defeat in 2026, mirroring his 2024 outcome."
