WhatsApp puts multiple accounts under review, temporarily blocks access for users

Multiple WhatsApp users, including some in India, experienced temporary account suspension on Monday evening, effectively blocking access to the messaging platform's features. The disruption occurred without prior notice, with affected users sharing screenshots of a message from the Meta-owned app stating their accounts were under review to comply with WhatsApp's terms of service.

The review process typically lasted 24 hours, during which account activity and device information were being checked. A WhatsApp spokesperson confirmed errors can occur when enforcing safety measures, stating they work to resolve issues promptly to restore user access. The app directed users to guidance on responsible use and information regarding stolen phones and accounts.

Several users complained about being disabled despite using the official version of the app, emphasizing the impact on communication for their work. This incident follows WhatsApp's ongoing scrutiny in India over its proposed username feature, which aims to enable communication without sharing phone numbers. The government has expressed concerns over potential misuse of the feature, including phishing, impersonation, and digital arrest scams.

WhatsApp maintains the feature is still under development and will be gradually introduced later this year, with safeguards already in place.
