Trump threatens Iran with "decapitation" as questions surround Strait of Hormuz, deal's future

Iran and Oman are reportedly nearing an agreement to reopen shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, according to US and Iranian officials interviewed by the New York Times. The proposed deal would grant Iran control over areas previously considered international waters, according to US officials. Ships entering the Persian Gulf would use a channel controlled by Iran, while those departing would pass through an Omani-controlled channel.

The agreement stipulates that no tolls will be charged, but a "service fee" for environmental and staffing costs will be equally split between Iran and Oman. However, a US official disputes this claim, stating there would be no tolls and the new routes are temporary and not dependent on Iran's approval.

Ali Vaez, a Middle East analyst at the International Crisis Group, told the Times that Iran views the Strait of Hormuz as its only significant gain from the war. This possible deal with Oman could put Iran in a better position than it was prior to the conflict. Former President Donald Trump has renewed US-Iran negotiations, urging the two nations to reach a deal before military action escalates further.

He has accused Iran of being "unbelievably duplicitous" and dishonest about the negotiations. Trump also insists that the Strait of Hormuz is entirely controlled by the US Navy, contradicting Iranian claims. Iran's Foreign Ministry denies any ongoing talks with the US, despite Trump's claims, but confirms that discussions with Oman are ongoing and show progress.

The dispute over the Strait of Hormuz remains a contentious issue, with the US unable to compel Iran to relinquish control, leading to increased oil prices and gasoline costs in the United States.
