Three crew injured as cargo ship hit by drone attack near Russia's Novorossiysk

Russia reported on Monday that a Ukrainian drone attack resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, comprising three children, and left 40 others injured at the Black Sea resort town of Gelendzhik, which it described as a targeted assault on civilians. Ukraine, like Russia, maintains that it does not deliberately target civilians during the ongoing conflict that began in 2022.

Social media footage, verified by Reuters, depicted a drone crashing into a crowded beach region near Gelendzhik, followed by a powerful explosion. Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of Russia's southern Krasnodar region, where Gelendzhik is situated, characterized the event as a tragedy, stating that the incident was a deliberate attack by the Ukrainian regime against the civilian population, with no link to military installations.

Kondratyev also disclosed falling drone fragments in a Telegram announcement, which often indicates Russian defenses have intercepted a Ukrainian drone. However, it remains uncertain whether Russia employed electronic interference or alternative air defense measures to alter the drone's trajectory before it struck the beach. A specialized medical disaster unit was dispatched to the scene of the blast in Arkhipo-Osipovka, a part of the larger Gelendzhik resort area, according to local authorities.

The health ministry confirmed that 21 people, including three children, were transported to the hospital, and nine individuals were in critical condition. Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia's Foreign Ministry, quoted by the Tass state news agency, accused Ukraine of engaging in terrorism. Earlier this month, Russia alleged that Kyiv's forces killed 11 people, including four children, in an assault on a holiday resort within a Russian-controlled part of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region.

Russia has repeatedly targeted locations in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, forcing millions to flee and causing extensive damage. Thousands of civilians have perished in the war, with the majority being Ukrainians who were killed in Russian attacks. In recent months, Ukraine has intensified long-range assaults into Russia, primarily targeting oil refineries and e-commerce warehouses, asserting that the objective is to make Russians bear the consequences of the ongoing conflict.
