Sydney man charged over fake gun had been at costume party, court told

A Sydney man, Jacopo Mastrocinque, was arrested for carrying a fake gun and wearing a fake police vest at a costume party at a bowling alley in Moore Park's Entertainment Quarter, according to court proceedings. The 35-year-old pizza shop owner was released on bail after the court heard the claims and found evidence supporting their validity.

The man's lawyer argued that his client had been dressed in costume for three hours and had stepped out for a cigarette when he was arrested. Initially, the police prosecutor claimed there was significant fear caused by Mastrocinque's appearance and a substantial police response. However, after gathering more information, it was established that a dress-up party themed 'heroes and villains' had taken place at the bowling alley, and CCTV footage supported the presence of people in costumes.

Judge Daniel Covington found cause to grant bail due to Mastrocinque's lack of criminal history, relationship stability, and compliance during his arrest. The judge ordered Mastrocinque to move to his partner's address, relinquish his Italian passport to the Ryde police station, and refrain from entering the entertainment quarter or any international airports. His case will be heard again on August 18 at Downing Centre Local Court.
