South Korean students detained for allegedly breaking into US military base

On Tuesday, eight South Korean students were apprehended for allegedly breaking into an American military base near Seoul, South Korea, according to police. The group, consisting of four males and four females, was seen shouting anti-American slogans upon entering the Osan Air Base. Subsequent to the incident, the students were handed over to South Korean authorities for further investigation.

The students are currently under scrutiny under a law safeguarding military installations in South Korea. During their questioning, all the students opted to remain silent. Police stated that the students had attempted to unlawfully enter the base via the main gate, with the U.S. military emphasizing that unauthorized access to such installations is treated with utmost seriousness.

The U.S. military affirmed that the group had attempted to unlawfully enter the base via the primary entrance. They asserted that any unauthorized attempts to access a U.S. military installation are treated with the utmost gravity.

The Korean Progressive University Student Union, which is associated with the detained students, asserted in a Facebook post that the individuals were protesting against the U.S. military's opposition to a South Korean semiconductor cluster project. However, the police declined to comment on the group's statement, which was not addressed by the U.S. military.

According to Yonhap news agency, the U.S. expressed significant interest in a military airport slated for relocation due to the semiconductor project.
