Oil prices fall on hopes Strait of Hormuz could reopen

Oil prices plummeted to a three-week low on Tuesday as US officials expressed optimism about a possible resolution with Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Senior US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, announced that talks had advanced, potentially allowing shipments to resume as early as this week.

The price of a barrel of Brent crude, the global benchmark for oil, dropped by nearly 5% to under $80 following the news of possible supply disruptions being alleviated. However, the unstable oil market has been influenced by past failed negotiations aimed at de-escalating tensions between the US and Iran, leading to higher fuel prices for consumers.

On Tuesday, Brent crude prices and US West Texas Intermediate prices both fell by more than 5%, reaching $76 a barrel – the lowest levels since July 13.
