North Dakota State’s college football dynasty finally reaches the big leagues

North Dakota State Bison football begins their journey to the next level in the Mountain West Conference, after securing a spot in the inaugural 2026 college football season. With an impressive 811-385-34 record and 12 Missouri Valley Football Conference titles, the Bison aim to make a seamless transition. The program has already amassed 750 wins at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level, more than any non-Ivy League program.

A change in quarterback, with Nathan Hayes stepping in as the new starter after Cole Payton's NFL departure, hasn't deterred the Bison. Alongside returning players, the team brings in two-star recruit Kene Anene to fill the right tackle position, and sophomore Ryan Babatz and freshman Gavin Wang to fill the left tackle spot. The defensive line, spearheaded by junior Trevor Marx, remains a vital component of their strategy.

The offensive line returns three starters, and the running back, DJ Scott, is primed to lead the offense. Tight end Reis Kessel and wide receiver Jackson Williams, once again, provide crucial support. On the defensive side, the Bison still miss the impact of linebacker Nathaniel Staehling, but robust replacements include Donovan Woolen and new transfers EJ Davis and DJ Voltz.

With a return to FBS play, NDSU is set to compete against teams like UNLV, New Mexico, Air Force, Wyoming, Hawai'i, and Nevada. The Bison are anticipated to contend within the Mountain West Conference, and possibly even secure a spot in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl against Toledo.
