Is China’s DF-17 hypersonic glider ready to strike from anywhere at any time?

A recent documentary on China's state television shed light on test launches of the DF-17, the world's first operational hypersonic glide weapon system. The episode, part of the "Securing Victory" series to mark the 99th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army, offered a rare look at the command-and-control center, research and development teams, and field operators.

The segment featured missile transporter-erector-launcher (TEL) units, which were later tested in an exercise. The TEL units initially prepared to launch but were ordered to abort and launch at a different time. Despite the internal thermal battery already being activated, the missile managed to execute additional maneuvers from a distance before successfully launching.

This capability of maintaining power and moving long distances while in a powered state is considered highly risky under traditional protocols. However, after reviewing data, on-site scientists cleared the missile for continued manoeuvring and launch, with operators expressing full confidence in the weapon system and their training.

The DF-17, which debuted at the National Day military parade in Beijing in October 2019, is China's first operational hypersonic glide weapon. Its aerodynamic design allows for unpredictable manoeuvrability and speeds of at least five times the speed of sound, making it nearly impossible for existing air-defence systems to intercept.

With a range of 1,800km to 2,500km, the DF-17 can reach the first island chain in the western Pacific and beyond. The documentary stated that the system is now ready to unleash its strategic potential at any time, shifting from fixed positions to all-domain mobility, enabling strikes anywhere upon command.
