Ghana, Malta launch project to strengthen ethics education

The Ghanaian and Maltese governments have officially joined forces in a groundbreaking initiative to bolster ethics education among the nation's youth. Dubbed "Project Ethics," the collaboration aims to integrate values-based learning, teacher training, and policy support into the educational system. The project, known as the Malta-Ghana Ethics Education Partnership, is spearheaded by StepUp Nigeria and financed by Malta's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs via the High Commission in Ghana.

Speaking at the launch event in Accra, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu emphasized the project's alignment with Ghana's broader objective of preserving social values and fostering a society where character is built upon moral principles. He outlined plans to embed ethics education from kindergarten through primary and junior high school levels, thus bolstering character development.

Mr. Ronald Micallef, the High Commissioner of Malta to Ghana, highlighted the growing significance of ethics education in an age marked by rapid technological advancements and the burgeoning influence of artificial intelligence. He underscored that the project not only fosters critical thinking and civic responsibility but also equips young people to make informed decisions within their communities.

The initiative complements Ghana's efforts to integrate ethics education into its educational framework, differing from existing models to cater specifically to Ghana's educational landscape. It builds upon a previously successful ethics education project in Ethiopia that was carried out in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
