Ex-ICC umpire recalls Kohli-Gambhir's IPL spat, says 'limit shouldn't be crossed'

Former Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary has shared his insights on Virat Kohli's fiery on-field reputation, recalling the 2013 IPL clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders. Chaudhary, who has been officiating Kohli's matches since his junior days in Delhi, praised the cricketer's passion and intensity, but emphasized that aggression is a crucial aspect of the sport when it remains within boundaries.

He noted that Kohli has always been an emotional player but never carries ill will. Chaudhary highlighted that Kohli's aggressive nature, often misunderstood, can also be expressed in positive ways, such as giving a thumbs up to officials when decisions are correct. The veteran umpire also reflected on the infamous Kohli-Gambhir altercation during the 2013 IPL, noting that such incidents are expected given the aggressive playing style of players from northern India.

He stressed that while there should be a limit to aggression, it's essential to maintain the game's excitement. Kohli, currently focusing on ODI cricket after retiring from T20 and Test internationals, had a remarkable IPL season in 2026, contributing significantly to Royal Challengers Bengaluru's title win and scoring a match-winning unbeaten 75 in the finals against Gujarat Titans.

Kohli's next international commitment is a three-match ODI series against the West Indies, starting on September 27, 2026, in Thiruvananthapuram.
