Drone strike on Moscow region kills five, regional governor says

Russian defense ministry announced on Tuesday that they had successfully neutralized or obliterated 320 Ukrainian drones throughout 19 regions during the previous night. This was accompanied by reports of six fatalities, nine injuries, and extensive damage to warehouses located near Moscow and St Petersburg. The strikes also resulted in casualties and injuries in Ukraine.

Out of the six victims in Russia, five of them succumbed to their injuries in the Moscow region, with six additional individuals sustaining injuries. Regional governor Andrei Vorobyov shared this information via Telegram on Tuesday. The sixth fatality was reported separately in Belgorod, where a woman tragically lost her life and two other individuals sustained wounds after a drone detonated a car in the early hours of the morning.

Reports indicate that a warehouse caught fire during the attack and was subsequently extinguished, but no further details were provided by Vorobyov. Additionally, near St Petersburg, drones targeted a warehouse facility, resulting in one casualty. Wildberries, Russia's leading online retailer, which has frequently been a victim of Ukraine's recent attacks, reported that its warehouse in close proximity to St Petersburg also suffered a fire, though there were no reported casualties.

Finland, being a member of both the European Union and NATO, lifted a temporary aviation restriction area in the eastern Gulf of Finland, as revealed by its defense forces on X. In Ukraine's northern city of Sumy, Russian-guided bomb strikes claimed the lives of two children and an elderly woman, while four people required medical attention, according to regional governor Oleh Hryhorov, who shared the details via Telegram.

The authenticity of these reports could not be independently verified by Reuters. Both Russia and Ukraine adamantly deny targeting civilians amidst the ongoing war that began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Earlier on Monday, a separate incident occurred when the roll-on/roll-off cargo ship Nadezhda was struck by a drone approximately 20 nautical miles off Russia's Black Sea port of Novorossiysk while en route to Turkey's northern port of Samsun.

Three crew members sustained serious injuries, and all 22 crew members, including those severely injured, were evacuated to Russia. The ship continued to burn in its bow, but it remains unclear who was responsible for the attack on the vessel.
