Can MS Paint run Doom? (Yes)

Microsoft's CTO, Mark Russinovich, has developed a program called DoomPaint that allows the classic first-person shooter game Doom to run on Microsoft Paint. This innovative project, detailed on Tom's Hardware, utilizes MS Paint as the game's display. The game can run at up to 35 frames per second, which is quite remarkable for a game from the 1990s.

The entire process involves placing each frame of the game on the Windows clipboard, which is then pasted into Paint's canvas as a standard document edit. Russinovich explained this in detail on the game's GitHub page, which also provides resources and instructions for running Doom on one's own version of MS Paint.

Interestingly, this version of Doom includes both sound and music, original features that the game is renowned for. Doom's efficiency in programming has allowed it to be adapted to run on a variety of platforms it was never originally designed for, including unusual ones like lawn mowers, printers, and even gut bacteria. However, the latter example was particularly impressive despite the extremely slow frame rate that would take around 600 years to complete a single playthrough.
