Brittany Ferries to cease live animal exports

Brittany Ferries will stop transporting live farm animals to France starting next month, a move that has sparked concern among Irish farmers. The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has expressed worry over the decision, as it could potentially hinder the movement of Irish cattle within the Single Market. IFA President Francie Gorman emphasized the urgency for Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon and his EU counterparts to ensure unhindered access for Irish cattle in the market.

While other carriers of livestock from Ireland remain, the IFA argues that any limitations in services due to commercial decisions by ferry companies or other service providers are a cause for concern. Ethical Farming Ireland, a volunteer group advocating for improved animal conditions, views the Brittany Ferries decision as a significant victory for animals.

After a year-long international campaign led by various NGOs, the group's executive director, Caroline Rowley, expressed delight at the ferry company's principled choice to halt involvement in this trade. However, Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher described the decision as a disaster for the calf export industry, warning that it significantly undermines not just this industry but overall Irish agriculture.

He stressed that Minister Heydon must be prepared to intervene if the market does not respond adequately, highlighting the many livelihoods at risk.
