Apple is finally closing a significant ecosystem gap with Android on Windows

Apple is in the process of developing a unified copy-paste feature that will enable seamless content sharing between iPhones and Windows PCs, with a target release by fall 2027. This functionality is made possible through Apple's universal clipboard feature, which currently allows users to transfer text or images from an iPhone to a Mac by highlighting the content and then tapping to paste it into the desired location on the MacBook.

Microsoft approached Apple under its EU interoperability request system for developers, seeking a mechanism that would permit apps to have persistent access to the device's clipboard, without requiring the app to be in the foreground or prompt users to repeatedly grant access. Microsoft's request, submitted in March, aimed to bridge the gap in copy-paste functionality between iPhones and Windows PCs, as the two platforms have historically had limited interoperability.

Apple responded to Microsoft's request on June 26, assuring that it will introduce a new solution to facilitate easy and direct copy and paste between an iPhone and a Windows PC. This feature will utilize Apple's AccessorySetupKit, which also enables third-party smartwatches to receive notifications from iPhones. To access this functionality, users will need to consent to sharing a clipboard with each of their paired accessories just once.

Apple characterizes the development of this feature as a "significant engineering effort" and is aiming to complete the work by the fall of 2027, before beta testing the feature in preparation for a wide release in the European Union. However, users outside the EU will have to wait and see if Apple will extend this functionality to other regions.
