Adopting responsible HIV reporting key to reducing stigma and strengthening advocacy

The Ghana AIDS Commission, in partnership with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), has emphasized the importance of responsible HIV reporting to combat stigma and strengthen advocacy efforts. This message was delivered during a media engagement program on August 4th. Dr Kharmacelle Prosper Akanbong, the Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, highlighted the significant role of the media in shaping public opinion and behavior.

He urged media professionals to recognize their pivotal role beyond mere event reporting. Each media output, from headlines to social media posts, can influence behaviors, perceptions, and ultimately contribute to saving lives. He stressed the need for sustained commitment to responsible HIV reporting, stating that the media remains essential in reducing stigma, encouraging healthy behaviors, boosting demand for HIV services, and maintaining national efforts to eradicate AIDS.

Dr Elia E. Houphouët, the Country Programme Manager of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, echoed this sentiment. She specifically cautioned journalists against sensationalism and urged them to adopt empathetic and sensitive approaches when covering HIV-related matters. She encouraged the media to humanize stories, focusing on personal experiences and realities rather than perpetuating negative stereotypes.

Dr Houphouët emphasized that responsible HIV reporting can change perceptions, encourage testing, and support people living with HIV to seek care without facing discrimination.
