'Your legacy will live forever': Nepal mourns climber Nirmal Purja

Nirmal Purja, a celebrated Nepalese climber, has been mourned across Nepal following the tragic avalanche that claimed the lives of all 10 members of his expedition on Pakistan's Broad Peak. Known as Nims, the British-Nepali climber gained international fame for being the first to climb the world's 14 tallest peaks in less than six months. His death has left a profound impact on the mountaineering community and Nepal, where he played a crucial role in highlighting Nepali climbing guides.

Purja's brother Kamal expressed his heartbreak, stating, "I feel as though I have lost my whole world. My brother was not only my younger brother - he was my heart." The community in Nepal was deeply saddened, with Prime Minister Balendra Shah paying tribute to his courage, dedication, and contribution. Students at Purja's former school, Small Heaven School in Chitwan district, also mourned his loss, recognizing his bravery and the pride he brought to Nepal.

Purja's school hostel supervisor, Shailendra Baral, recalled his fearless and committed nature, even as a young boy. Fellow school friend Bahadur Panta mentioned how Purja was prayed for by people worldwide as news of his disappearance broke. Social media was filled with tributes, with many describing Nepal as in mourning and acknowledging the loss of a legend.

Purja's journey to stardom began with his documented expedition on Broad Peak, which was featured in a 2021 Netflix documentary. He served in the British military for 16 years, including 10 in special forces, and was awarded an MBE by the late Queen in 2018 for his achievements in high-altitude mountaineering. He was also the first Gurkha to climb Everest while serving in the British military.

However, troubling allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced in 2024, which he denied. Despite these allegations, Purja's legacy as a pioneering climber and his impact on the Nepali climbing community continues to inspire.
