Young gospel musicians use my songs without permission – Obaapa Christy

Renowned Ghanaian gospel artist Obaapa Christy has disclosed that numerous young gospel musicians utilize her compositions during events and on digital platforms without obtaining prior consent. In an interview on Hitz Praise Zone with Nii Noi, Obaapa Christy elucidated that while she acknowledges this practice due to her own past reliance on senior gospel artists' works during the nascent phase of her career, the disparity lies in the abundant opportunities afforded to contemporary musicians.

She elucidated, "Back then, we only had radio and television, and even those channels were constrained. Conversely, the advent of social media has unfurled a myriad of prospects for budding musicians to disseminate their gifts to a global audience." Obaapa Christy further asserted that she refrains from pursuing or admonishing young artists for performing her tunes, asserting, "Had social media been in vogue during our era, I'm convinced several musicians from our cohort would likewise have harnessed other artists' works to augment their platforms."

Furthermore, she revealed that many musicians have utilized her songs to escalate their YouTube channels and other social media profiles, propelling them to garner followers and expand their audiences. She emphasized, "Some of them even earn a livelihood from the traction they've garnered using my songs, and I perceive that as a beneficial outcome.

Currently, she is gearing up to preside over the 2026 edition of Royal Praise, a day of worship and gospel music scheduled to occur on Sunday, 9 August 2026, at UPSA in Accra.
