The ‘Guardrail Guy’ Went Viral for Posting About Flock Cameras. Then Someone Destroyed Them

In April, Eimers began posting about automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) and their potential risks to passenger safety. He believed that many ALPRs were installed too close to guardrails or on existing road signs, which could compromise their functionality. His videos on this topic gained significant attention, sparking a debate about the cameras' effectiveness and privacy concerns. Some people even suggested vandalism methods, such as using a large diameter pipe cutter.

In July, Flock, a well-known ALPR brand, announced it would conduct a nationwide audit of its camera installations. Eimers, who had previously posted about a Flock camera he believed was not crash-worthy, came across the damaged camera while driving home with his daughter. He described the camera as if it had been shot. Another Flock camera he had documented earlier that month was also severely damaged. After witnessing these incidents, Eimers decided to halt all ALPR-related advocacy work indefinitely.

Eimers reported the damage to local police, and later, Adam Heimerman was arrested and charged with felony vandalism for shooting four ALPR cameras in the area. Despite the arrest, many of the comments on the news expressed support for Heimerman. Flock spokesperson Paris Lewbel stated that the company has received only a few reports about camera damage.

Eimers expressed concern that someone getting hurt is a greater risk than the damage to the cameras themselves. He aimed to focus on roadside safety and crashworthiness, leaving the privacy discourse to civil rights groups. Eimers left his existing content about ALPRs up, believing it would make America safer.
