Several WhatsApp users say their accounts 'put under review'

On Monday, August 3, 2026, the popular instant messaging app WhatsApp placed numerous user accounts under review for a 24-hour period, temporarily blocking all features. This action prompted several affected users to raise the issue on social media platforms. A WhatsApp spokesperson stated, "We are always working to stay ahead of those trying to abuse our service and ban accounts to help keep other users safe. Sometimes we get this wrong and if we do, we try to fix it as quickly as possible to get people back to chatting."

The disruption was noticed around 8 p.m. Indian Standard Time when users began experiencing problems without any prior notice from WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Meta. When users opened the app, they saw the message "Account in review. Date requested: 3 Aug 2026. Your account activity and device info is being checked to make sure it follows our terms of service.

We will notify you of the result typically within 24 hours." An option to learn about account issues was provided, including guidance on responsible usage and information about stolen phones and accounts.

Social media users expressed frustration, with some reporting their accounts were disabled without explanation and others pleading for assistance. One user on X wrote, "My WhatsApp account was suddenly disabled without any warning. I only use the official app, and my work depends on WhatsApp. Please help." The spokesperson reiterated that the company aims to ensure a safe environment for users and will resolve issues as swiftly as possible.
