Operation Sindoor architect AK Bharti signs off after 39 years

Air Marshal AK Bharti, who served in the Indian Air Force for 39 years, officially retired on July 31, 2026. His tenure concluded his time as Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, a role he had held since June 1, 2025. Bharti succeeded Air Marshal Tejpal Singh on August 1, 2026. Prior to his retirement, Bharti had spent his final day in service at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, honoring soldiers who had made the ultimate sacrifice.

He was succeeded by Air Marshal Tejpal Singh on August 1, 2026. Bharti's career began in 1977 when he was admitted to Sainik School Tilaiya, and later excelled at the National Defence Academy and Air Force Academy, where he earned the prestigious Sword of Honour. Commissioned in the fighter stream in 1987, Bharti accumulated over 4,000 hours of flight experience across various fighter jets and earned recognition for his exceptional flying skills.

He served in various command positions, including No. 24 Squadron and No. 30 Squadron, where he played a crucial role in operationalizing the Su-30MKI's weapon systems. His leadership extended to commanding a frontline fighter base and serving as Air Attaché in Malaysia, where he trained Malaysian pilots on the Su-30MKM. Bharti's appointment as Director General of Air Operations marked a significant shift in his career, focusing on strategic air operations and integration of air defense capabilities.

He was awarded several medals, including the Vayu Sena Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal, the highest wartime distinguished service award in India. As the IAF continues to pursue modernization and indigenization, Bharti's legacy and the decisions made during his tenure will shape the future of the Indian Air Force.
