Laxman Savadi seen as political counterfoil to Satish Jarkiholi in Belagavi district

Laxman Savadi, a 66-year-old Congress MLA, is being appointed as a minister in Karnataka. Known for his involvement in the co-operative political arena, Savadi has a rich career in the sector. He served as a director of the district central co-operative bank for two terms before entering electoral politics in 1999. Savadi contested as an independent candidate in 1999 and lost to Congress veteran Shahajahan Dongargaon, but managed to win against Dongargaon in the 2004 elections.

He has won four Assembly polls and a legislative council election in 22 years. Savadi's promotion to the cabinet is linked to his proximity to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who reportedly persuaded him to defect from the BJP. The Congress party faced a tough decision among 11 Congress MLAs in the Belagavi district, leading them to choose Savadi as an alternative leadership.

Savadi's association with the Jarkiholi clan is strained, making him an ideal candidate for the strategy. The Jarkiholis, including Satish Jarkiholi, had previously allied with BJP leader Anna Saheb Jolle to defeat Savadi's panel of candidates in the DCC Bank elections. Despite his successful political career, Savadi has faced controversies, including his resignation from the BJP cabinet in 2012 and a police complaint filed in January 2026.

Savadi, belonging to the Ganiga community, is known for his influence on the Lingayat community and is considered a crowd puller among Lingayat leaders.
