Kerala rains: heavy rain continues to batter district

Heavy rainfall persisted in the Kozhikode district for the third consecutive day on Monday, August 3, 2026. Low-lying regions in various parts of the district remained submerged, prompting authorities to relocate families to safer locations. A partial collapse of houses was also reported on the day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, predicting heavy rainfall with gusty winds for the following day, Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

The district administration declared a holiday for schools in both upland and coastal areas due to the continuous downpour. However, scheduled exams and online classes will continue as planned.

As of Monday evening, 964 individuals, comprising 701 men, 418 women, and 170 children, were residing in 32 relief camps scattered throughout the district. Kozhikode taluk had the highest number of displaced residents, with 701 people from 260 families accommodated in 15 camps. Thamarassery taluk saw 80 people in 8 camps, Vadakara taluk had 165 individuals in 16 camps, and Koyilandy taluk had 18 people in 3 camps.

Kannadikkal-Parambil Bazar area experienced significant inundation, with 200 families affected after the water levels in the Poonoor River rose. Residents were swiftly moved to safer locations as low-lying areas became inundated. Power connections were cut off in the affected area. The IMD revised its earlier yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall to an orange alert, anticipating a more severe weather event.

A fortunate escape occurred when Noushad, an autorickshaw driver from Velliparamba near the Government Medical College Hospital, narrowly avoided a house collapse in the early hours of Monday. His family, comprising Mr. Noushad, his wife, and two children, hurriedly evacuated the house after hearing a loud noise around 3 a.m. The kitchen, one bathroom, and work area suffered severe damage, while household utensils were also destroyed. Mr. Noushad and his wife were asleep near the kitchen when the incident occurred.

Another household in Nadakkavu faced a similar fate when a wall inside their house collapsed on Sunday night. Mr. Ajayakumar, his wife, and their children were watching television when the collapse took place. They have since been relocated to another residence. In Odumbra and Chalappuram areas, wells reportedly caved in, while low-lying Mavoor saw water-logging. The Kuttiyadi River residents were advised to stay alert as two spillway gates at the Kakkayam Dam were opened to release excess water safely.
