Kerala floods 2026: several parts of Kottayam still inundated, over 3,700 shifted to relief camps

Kerala's Kottayam district continues to bear the brunt of devastating floods, with several areas still submerged in water even as rain appears to have eased. Overnight downpours have exacerbated the situation, forcing residents to seek refuge in relief camps. The Meenachil river, along with the Muvattupuzha, Kodoor, and Manimala rivers, have breached their banks, inundating hundreds of homes and vast expanses of farmland.

Experts attribute the unprecedented flooding to heavy rainfall over the Vagamon hills on Friday night, with areas receiving up to 31 cm of rain in a short period. The deluge has disrupted traffic, particularly on the Kottayam-Kumarakom Road, and left many interior roads inaccessible. As of now, 3,714 people have been accommodated in 114 relief camps across the district, with officials warning that further heavy rains could worsen the crisis.
