Iran denies negotiations with US after Trump announces talks

Iranian officials have firmly denied any ongoing negotiations with the United States, despite President Donald Trump's announcement that the two nations were set to begin talks later that day. Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stated during a televised press conference that Iran is currently in discussions with Oman regarding a temporary safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

President Trump had previously announced that new negotiations would commence on Monday, with the aim of addressing the Strait of Hormuz and ultimately pursuing Iran's denuclearization. Oil prices experienced a decline on Monday, as traders reacted to the news of the potential talks, with West Texas Intermediate falling 4.7% to $80.72 per barrel.

The announcement of the new negotiations came after a period of renewed strikes by Iran, raising concerns of further escalation. President Trump had initially threatened to retaliate "very hard" against Iran, but later withdrew that threat, stating that a deal was close and negotiations were underway. However, Iranian media sources have denied Iran's involvement in the discussions, and Western nations maintain their suspicion that Tehran is in possession of a nuclear weapon.
