HD Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has commenced construction of a new 115,000-ton LNG LR2 dual-fuel tanker

On July 30th, HD Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (HVS) marked the beginning of construction on a new 115,000-ton LNG LR2 dual-fuel tanker. This vessel is the first of two in a series, specifically designed for Union Maritime (UK). The contract for the project was signed by Union Maritime on March 29, 2024, with HD Hyundai Mipo (HD HMD), which is now known as HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI), to build the two vessels at HVS.

The ship is set to be delivered in August 2027, with the second vessel following in November 2027. One of the most notable features of this project is the simultaneous integration of a dual LNG fuel system and WindWing technology. WindWing is a rigid sail technology that harnesses wind power to assist the ship's propulsion, which significantly reduces CO₂, SOx, and NOx emissions.

This innovative approach not only saves fuel and enhances operational efficiency but also aligns with the increasingly stringent international maritime environmental standards. It also boosts the competitiveness and value of the newly constructed vessel.
