Former IATA chief Willie Walsh takes charge as IndiGo CEO

Willie Walsh, the former International Air Transport Association (IATA) chief, assumed the role of CEO at IndiGo airline on Monday. IndiGo had announced his appointment as CEO in March 2026. Rahul Bhatia, IndiGo's managing director, expressed his delight at welcoming Walsh, stating that his extensive global experience and operational expertise would help the airline accelerate its international expansion strategy.

Walsh, with over four decades of leadership experience in the global aviation sector, will collaborate closely with the Board and management team to build on IndiGo's operational foundations. He began his career as a pilot at Aer Lingus and held leadership positions at several prominent aviation organizations, including CEO of British Airways (2005-2011) and CEO of International Airlines Group (2011-2020).

Walsh expressed his excitement about joining IndiGo at an opportune time, as the airline continues to grow and expand. As CEO, Walsh's primary focus will be on accelerating IndiGo's global growth trajectory, enhancing operational excellence, strengthening the network and commercial strategy, and improving customer experience. He will work closely with the Board and leadership team to guide IndiGo through its next stage of growth and maintain its leadership position in the industry.
