Ethics panel urges censure of Rep. Chuck Edwards over sexual harassment violation

The House Ethics Committee has determined that Representative Chuck Edwards, a Republican from North Carolina, breached House Rules by not upholding the spirit of regulations that prohibit sexual harassment and unwanted advances towards House staff, as outlined in a 25-page report released on Monday.

The bipartisan committee has urged that Edwards be censured following their conclusion that he transgressed the Code of Official Conduct by failing to conduct himself in a manner befitting the House. The committee plans to present a privileged resolution for the full House to vote on and consider.

The decision stems from reporting by Axios, which revealed that Edwards had singled out two young female staff members in their twenties for special attention, an action that several sources characterized as inappropriate. Despite these allegations, Edwards has consistently denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the accusations as "horseshit" in a May interview with The Assembly. He expressed openness to undergoing an investigation and claimed he was cooperating with the Ethics Committee.

It is important to note that the Ethics Committee itself does not have the power to impose punishments; its role is to recommend penalties. The final decision to censure Edwards lies with the full House, which requires a simple majority to vote in favor of the resolution. The House is currently on recess and is not expected to reconvene until August 31, meaning no floor action is anticipated until lawmakers return.
