Documentary captures impacts of diamond mining along South Africa’s West Coast

South Africa's West Coast, a region stretching 450 kilometers from Cape Columbine to the Orange River, is characterized by vast, remote landscapes and a harsh, arid climate. The northern part of the coast, near the Richtersveld, is home to a unique biodiversity hotspot and the only remaining area where the Nama people maintain their semi-nomadic traditions.

This region, which includes parts declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007, boasts an extraordinary range of succulents and plant diversity, with one of the highest densities of succulent species in the world.

Apart from diamonds, the West Coast also holds other mineral deposits, making it South Africa's most intensively mined landscape over the past century. A new documentary, Out of Mined, captures the legacy of mining in this region as it faces renewed interest from the mining sector. The film, directed by Arthur Neumeier from Cape Town, focuses on the impact of mining on local communities, particularly the closing of a diamond mine in Hondeklipbaai in the early 2000s, which led to job losses and disrupted livelihoods for many residents.

The documentary sheds light on the complex relationship between mining and the environment in this remote region. As mining continues to be an important economic activity, the documentary raises questions about the long-term sustainability of these practices and the need to balance economic growth with the preservation of South Africa's unique biodiversity.
