Apple’s Rumored Camera-Equipped AirPods Could Arrive as Early as This Year

Apple may release camera-equipped AirPods this year, according to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The devices could be unveiled as early as this year, earlier than previous estimates of a 2027 launch. The source of this information lies in code found in iOS 27 beta releases, which reference a device called B790. This camera-equipped AirPods device, B790, is reportedly further along in development than its counterpart, B798.

With August already here, camera-equipped AirPods could be available in the coming months. Bloomberg noted that these AirPods would serve as Apple's first AI-focused wearable product. Instead of capturing photos or videos, the cameras would act as visual sensors, providing Siri with more context about the user's surroundings.

However, several questions remain unanswered. The compact and lightweight design of AirPods might be compromised if cameras are added, potentially making them bulkier and affecting their stability during activities like running or workouts. Additionally, the functionality of the cameras is unclear. Will users need to direct their heads in a specific way for the cameras to capture what Siri needs to see, or will Apple employ wide-angle or panoramic cameras that can recognize surroundings regardless of head position?

The latter option would likely provide a smoother experience, while the former could make the feature feel awkward and unintuitive. Apple may also need to consider whether a companion device with a display is necessary, as the lack of a screen could make it difficult for wearers to confirm what the cameras are seeing.

Privacy concerns are another significant issue. Camera-equipped AirPods could face scrutiny, similar to wearable devices with built-in cameras like Meta's smart glasses, which have raised concerns about unauthorized photography or recording. Apple will need to address these privacy concerns to ensure the acceptable use of camera-equipped AirPods.

Lastly, the price of camera-equipped AirPods remains unknown. Depending on the extent of the camera hardware changes, the new model could cost as much as, or even more than, the AirPods Max, which sells for $549. Apple typically uses its fall iPhone events to introduce major AirPods updates, but a different launch window cannot be ruled out.
