Virginia students rescue three family members from Lake Culpeper

Three high school students from Culpeper, Virginia are being celebrated as heroes after they jumped into Lake Culpeper to save a family whose kayaks had capsized on July 27. The teens, Andrew Tuggle, 15, Jackson Castro, 17, and Gavin Cain, 17, were at golf team tryouts when they noticed the overturned kayaks near the dam's water intake area. Without hesitation, they called 911, informed their coaches, and immediately dove into the water to assist.

The rescue took place around 3:30 p.m. in a challenging area with a steep, overgrown hillside and boulders lining the edge, making it difficult to reach the water. Despite these obstacles, the teens navigated through thorny brush, swam to the family, and managed to bring two adults and a 3-year-old boy to safety. All three family members were wearing life jackets and were not injured during the rescue.

The teens described hearing a loud splash and the child's cries for help. They were bold in their actions, running down to the lake shirtless and shoeless, showing their instinctive bravery. Culpeper Police Chief Christopher Settle and Culpeper County Public Schools praised the boys for their quick thinking and courage in saving the lives of three individuals.

Their coach, Patrick Thornhill, highlighted the boys' character, describing them as strong and community-oriented. The Culpeper Police Department and schools also commended the teens for averting a potential tragedy. This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly emergencies can arise on the water and the importance of individuals who act promptly in life-threatening situations.
