Trump’s Iran announcement presents a fresh challenge for Netanyahu

US President Donald Trump's decision to call off strikes on Iran brings about a fresh challenge for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump assured Israel of its commitment to this decision, but Netanyahu has not yet commented, which is not surprising. Netanyahu was in the Oval Office just two days ago and may have hoped to sway Trump's stance on both Iran and Gaza. However, Netanyahu finds himself facing setbacks in both areas as the week begins in Israel.

Netanyahu is eager for the US to resume its military campaign against Iran, as it marked a significant triumph for him. Yet, this victory turned out to be short-lived. Israel is more concerned with Iran's nuclear program and the regime behind it, rather than the immediate effects on energy prices or the freedom of shipping companies to transport oil from the Persian Gulf. For Netanyahu and a large segment of the Israeli public, the security of Iran's nuclear program poses a substantial threat.

Furthermore, Netanyahu faces additional challenges regarding Gaza. His office had already expressed concerns prior to Trump's declaration that Hamas had agreed to disarm, describing it as a "monumental step towards lasting peace and security." Israel believes that Washington is too eager to achieve a win and too willing to make concessions to Hamas.

Netanyahu desires no limitations on Israel's freedom of action in Gaza, and public opinion in Israel largely shares this view. Netanyahu will likely try to delay or even prevent any US-led efforts to halt strikes on Gaza or make significant withdrawals, even if such actions would still keep Israeli forces inside the enclave.
