Trump says new Iran talks to begin Monday after calling off strikes

US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that talks with Iran will commence on Monday, following his decision to postpone fresh "devastating" strikes on the Islamic nation. The primary aim of these negotiations is to forge a deal, according to Trump. He clarified that the US partners, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, requested him to refrain from launching the anticipated massive attack, which Trump likened to the most significant conflict since World War II.

Trump mentioned that he had received similar requests from Iran itself. On Saturday, Trump had backed off from his threats for a substantial assault against Iran, stating the "perimeter" of a deal was already in place. He explained his reasoning, noting that his adversaries had asked to call off the strikes, suggesting they believe a deal is imminent.

The talks are expected to cover two key areas: securing the Strait of Hormuz and addressing Iran's nuclear program, also known as the denuclearisation of Iran. Trump reiterated the catastrophic consequences the planned strikes could have inflicted, estimating it would take many years for Iran to rebuild if at all. Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman had also cautioned against the strikes, warning of potential adverse effects such as a surge in refugees and widespread devastation.

The conflict escalated on February 28 when the US and Israel initiated surprise strikes against Iran. However, intermittent diplomatic efforts have resulted in intermittent periods of tranquillity. A previous ceasefire agreement, which included the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz - a critical artery for global energy flows - unraveled, leading to Iran tightening its grip on the vital waterway as the two nations resumed hostilities in recent weeks.
