Student who rushed to help victims killed in follow-up Kyiv strike

Fourth-year student Vitalina Yarovenko lost her life in a follow-up missile strike on Kyiv on August 1, according to the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Yarovenko, a member of the academy's Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachnyi Military Training program, had ventured to the site of an earlier missile strike to aid in rescue efforts. The university lauded her for her unwavering commitment to helping others, emphasizing her hands-on approach to teaching and her willingness to be where her assistance was most needed.

Russian forces launched ballistic missiles in an overnight attack on Kyiv, causing widespread destruction and casualties. Falling debris and fires were reported in various districts, with the Darnytskyi district experiencing the most significant damage. In Darnytskyi, seven people perished: five while attempting to reach a concrete shelter during an air raid alert, and two who were killed while aiding the wounded from a previous strike.

The attack resulted in a total of nine fatalities and 33 injuries in Kyiv. Five ambulances were obliterated by fire, and 20 additional vehicles belonging to Kyivmedspetstrans, the city's medical transport service, suffered severe damage. Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 220 aerial weapons, including 35 missiles and 185 drones.

Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept one of the 27 ballistic missiles, as well as 154 drones, owing to a shortage of interceptor missiles for Patriot systems. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the challenge posed by the missile barrage.
