Speed check week takes place across Germany from August 3

From August 3 to 9, police forces across Germany will conduct a nationwide "speed week" (Blitzermarathon) as part of the European speed camera marathon. This initiative aims to crack down on speeding during peak travel season. Every federal state, except Bavaria, Saxony, and Saarland, will participate in the operation.

Unlike the April Blitzermarathon, there is no specific peak day for the checks, ensuring consistent enforcement throughout the entire week. Thousands of police officers and additional speed cameras will be deployed to enforce speed limits more strictly, particularly on roads with frequent accidents and higher-risk areas such as near schools, construction sites, kindergartens, nursing homes, and hospitals. Violators may face fines or even have their driving licenses confiscated.

The operation, organized by Roadpol, a network of European traffic police forces, aims to reduce the number of road victims by ensuring drivers adhere to traffic safety regulations. Over 20 countries, including the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Belgium, participate in the Blitzermarathon each year, with more than half joining every year.

While previous editions of the speed week reduced road victims by 25 percent, the effects diminish once the speed cameras are removed, according to Stefan Bauernschuster, a researcher at the University of Passau.
