Speed check week takes place across Germany from August 3

From August 3 to 9, German police will conduct a "speed week" (Blitzermarathon) in an effort to crack down on speeding across the country. This initiative is part of the European speed camera marathon, which involves more than 20 countries, with more than half participating in the Blitzermarathon annually. The week of enforcement is scheduled during peak travel season, with police officers and additional speed cameras deployed to enforce speed limits more strictly on roads prone to accidents and high-risk areas such as schools, construction sites, kindergartens, nursing homes, and hospitals.

Fines and even driving licence confiscation are possible consequences for drivers caught speeding during this period. While previous editions of the speed week have reportedly reduced road casualties by 25 percent, the impact of the operation tends to fade once the cameras are removed, according to Stefan Bauernschuster, a researcher at the University of Passau.

This speed check week is organized by Roadpol, a collaboration of European traffic police forces, with the aim of minimizing road accidents by ensuring traffic safety regulations are adhered to.
