Report: Apple’s smart glasses will become a major health companion, but not initially

According to the latest Power On newsletter from Mark Gurman, Apple is developing its upcoming non-AR smart glasses with health and fitness features in mind, though these functionalities likely won't be present in the first generation model. Apple had been exploring the potential of Vision Pro as a health platform, with plans for a version of the Fitness+ app running on the device.

This would allow users to follow workout videos, track their movements, and close rings within the headset. However, this idea was abandoned due to the weight of the headset and technological challenges.

The company is now considering a similar concept with its upcoming smart glasses. However, since the glasses will lack displays, the health and fitness features will need to be adapted accordingly. Apple is reportedly hiring for a role that involves defining the future of health, well-being, and fitness experiences across vision products.

This person will be responsible for translating ambiguous opportunities at the intersection of spatial computing, wearables, consumer health, and human behavior into concrete product directions.

Potential features for the smart glasses could include a "Workout Buddy" functionality inspired by Apple Watch's feature, paired with a heart-rate sensor similar to that found in AirPods Pro 3. The glasses' cameras might also be utilized to provide real-time feedback during various activities, helping users improve their workouts. While these features are expected to arrive in a later generation of the product, Apple's vision for health-focused smart glasses is clearly a priority for the company.
