Nepal mourns climber Nirmal Purja after death is confirmed on Pakistan’s Broad Peak

Climbing legend Nirmal Purja, known as "Nims Dai," has died after a deadly avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak, where all ten members of his international expedition perished. Purja, 43, made global headlines in 2019 when he became the first to summit all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in just 189 days. The bodies of seven climbers, including Purja, were recovered on Sunday, while authorities are still searching for the remaining three.

News of his death has sparked mourning across Nepal, with Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressing condolences and a statue erected in Kathmandu in honor of the celebrated mountaineer. The international climbing community also mourns Purja, with his contributions to Nepal's Sherpa community and his commitment to helping others highlighted as key aspects of his legacy.
