Ayaneo’s new handheld revives the Game Boy Advance. Nintendo probably wishes it had done it first

On the 25th anniversary of the Game Boy Advance in the United States, Chinese handheld manufacturer Ayaneo has introduced the Konkr Pocket Advance, a modern version of the beloved classic. Rather than merely resembling the original, Ayaneo has incorporated advanced features to cater to the expanding retro gaming market. The Konkr Pocket Advance boasts a higher-resolution display, extra controls, USB-C connectivity, and wireless capabilities, setting it apart as a contemporary handheld inspired by one of gaming's most influential consoles.

The device maintains the original's signature horizontal layout, featuring a 3.5-inch screen with a 960x640 resolution, which is significantly sharper than the original Game Boy Advance's screen. Additionally, the handheld includes a full set of ABXY buttons, menu and shoulder buttons, USB-C, microSD expansion, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a dedicated volume wheel.

Initially, the Konkr Pocket Advance will be available in two colors: a navy blue reminiscent of the classic Indigo Game Boy Advance and a coral orange similar to Nintendo's exclusive Spice Orange edition, which was originally available in Japan. Pricing and the release date have yet to be announced, but Ayaneo expects broader distribution for the Pocket Advance later this year.

This announcement underscores a growing trend in the gaming industry, as third-party manufacturers leverage nostalgia to attract players seeking improved displays, rechargeable batteries, wireless connectivity, and ergonomic designs. Nintendo, despite its enduring popularity and extensive library of classic games, has shown little interest in producing dedicated retro hardware beyond occasional emulation through Switch Online, leaving opportunities for companies like Ayaneo to capitalize on the demand for modern retro handhelds.
