I defected to the PS5 after 30 years of PC gaming — here's why I have no regrets about swapping the RAM crisis for the disc crisis

I have been an avid PC gamer since the early 1990s, playing games such as Star Wars: X-Wing, Doom, Quake, and EverQuest, and later World of Warcraft. However, my gaming habits changed in 2025 when I switched to the PS5 as my primary gaming device. There were several factors that led to this decision. Firstly, setting up my PC in the study and running cables to the living room TV for couch co-op sessions with my wife proved to be a hassle.

The HDMI cable was unreliable and kept flickering, causing issues with the picture on my Sony OLED TV. Additionally, I encountered occasional problems with my game controllers, which were typical PC hardware gremlins. Furthermore, I had postponed upgrading my PC's GPU, as I had planned to use the money for a PS5 purchase, but I was frustrated with the performance of the RTX 5070 and the high prices of AMD's rival GPUs.

The Black Friday PS5 Pro bundle deal, which was a great deal, convinced me to make the switch. While I do miss some aspects of PC gaming, I appreciate the convenience and seamless experience of the PS5 Pro. The console is quieter, boots up quickly, and wakes and sleeps easily, allowing for brief gaming sessions. Visually, the PS5 Pro delivers excellent graphics on my 4K OLED TV, and games like Baldur's Gate 3 look fantastic.

The DualSense controllers are also an improvement over the PS4 models, especially for my wife who found many controllers too bulky. However, there are some drawbacks to the PS5. I miss the freedom of PC gaming, such as being able to troubleshoot issues and customize my setup. Additionally, Sony's decision regarding discs is a clear downside, as it limits the flexibility of playing games physically.

Despite these drawbacks, I am content with my decision to switch to the PS5 Pro and will continue to enjoy my gaming experience with this console.
