Canada tightens work permit rules for foreign workers

Canada has implemented stricter checks on study permit applications, focusing more closely on the source of funds applicants provide. Immigration officers are now required to examine both the amount and origin of financial documents, rather than just high-risk cases as previously. The guidance emphasizes that the source of funds must be assessed in all cases.

Additionally, officers will review six months of bank statements, including the month prior to application submission, and may request supplementary financial and employment documentation. Previously, this scrutiny was only applied in specific high-risk environments. The updated instructions also include examples of acceptable proof of funds, such as pension income and rental property income.

The required amount of proof of funds remains unchanged, but the documentation requirements have become more stringent. Despite these changes, Canada remains a popular destination for Indian students, with 17,540 Indian study permits issued in the first quarter of 2026, accounting for 24.5% of all permits granted.
